The Dobson Museum & Home Reopens

After an extensive transformation, the Dobson Museum & Home is ready to welcome the community back—reimagined, revitalized, and more engaging than ever. The grand reopening marks not just a milestone for the museum, but a renewed commitment to preserving and sharing the stories that define Ottawa County.

This isn’t simply a reopening. It’s a return—with purpose. A founders vision reimagined.

Visitors will experience eight newly designed galleries, immersive exhibits, and thoughtfully curated artifacts that bring local history to life in ways that are both meaningful and memorable. Every detail has been designed to make the museum more accessible, more engaging, and more connected to the people it serves.

“This museum has always belonged to the community,” said Jordan Byrd, Museum Director, “This renovation allows us to honor that legacy while creating a space where stories can be experienced—not just displayed. We want every visitor to feel a sense of connection when they walk through these doors.”

That connection is deeply personal for many—including 94-year-old Nancy Gee, a beloved retired school teacher, former library board member, and member of the Friends of the Coleman Theatre Ballroom.

“I knew Nellie,” Gee reflected. “She believed in preserving history because she believed in people. Seeing this place brought back to life—full of energy and stories again—feels like something she would be very proud of.”

The reopening celebration invites guests of all ages to explore, discover, and reconnect. Families can enjoy interactive exhibits, engage with knowledgeable docents sharing stories throughout the galleries, and experience a museum designed to inspire and inform.

Three Ways to Celebrate the Reopening

The Dobson Museum & Home will mark its grand reopening with multiple opportunities to experience the new space—each designed to meet people where they are.

April 9 — Ribbon Cutting Celebration

Be part of the official reopening moment. The ribbon cutting event brings the community together to celebrate the transformation of the museum and the vision behind it.

What to expect:

  • A formal ribbon cutting ceremony
  • Community leaders and stakeholder remarks
  • First look at the newly renovated museum
  • A shared moment marking a new chapter for Ottawa County

This is the moment that officially reopens the doors—and invites the community back in.

April 11 — Decades of Dobson: Family Celebration

A more casual, high-energy community event designed for families, friends, and neighbors to explore and enjoy the museum together.

What to expect:

  • Food trucks and a welcoming, festival-style atmosphere
  • Kid-friendly activities and hands-on experiences
  • Full access to all galleries and interactive exhibits
  • Docents throughout the museum sharing stories, answering questions, and highlighting key exhibits

This is where the museum comes to life—full of movement, conversation, and discovery.

Visit on Your Schedule — Ongoing Public Hours

Can’t make either event? You’re still invited.

The Dobson Museum & Home is open and ready for you to explore at your own pace. Whether you prefer a quiet weekday visit or a weekend outing, the newly renovated museum is designed to welcome you when it works best for you.

What to expect:

  • A self-guided experience through eight new galleries
  • Interactive exhibits designed for all ages
  • Opportunities to engage with staff and docents during regular hours
  • A comfortable, accessible environment built for exploration and learning

No crowds. No schedule. Just time to connect with the stories that matter most.

A Museum Built for You

More than a building, the Dobson Museum & Home stands as a reflection of the community itself—its past, its people, and its shared future.

Whether you attend the ribbon cutting, the family celebration, or visit on your own time, you’ll experience a museum that has been thoughtfully rebuilt with one goal in mind: to create a place where history feels personal, relevant, and alive.

This grand reopening is your invitation to be part of that story.
