This month, Waylan's Ku-Ku Burger in Miami was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing more than sixty years of serving great food and welcoming travelers along Historic Route 66. It's a well-deserved honor for one of northeast Oklahoma's most recognizable landmarks.

More Than a Restaurant

For generations of local families, Waylan's Ku-Ku Burger has been the place to celebrate Little League victories, catch up with friends over lunch, or introduce visitors to one of Miami's favorite traditions. For Route 66 travelers, it's become a must-stop destination—a place where classic American roadside culture is still very much alive.

Originally opened in April 1966, Waylan's has been a downtown Miami landmark for nearly six decades. In 1973, Eugene "Gene" Waylan purchased the restaurant and has been serving its signature burgers and shakes ever since. Today, he still works the grill, welcoming customers much as he has for more than 50 years.

According to Roadside Architecture , the Ku-Ku restaurant installed a bird over the roof that chimed every hour. Perhaps most remarkable, Waylan's is the last surviving Ku-Ku Burger from a chain that once included more than 200 locations across the Midwest. Today, it stands as a rare and authentic reminder of the roadside architecture, entrepreneurship, and community spirit that helped define Route 66 during its heyday.

How Native American Resettlement Shaped Ottawa County Oklahoma

Long before Route 66 carried families, vacationers, and dreamers through Miami, Oklahoma, another journey forever changed this corner of the state. During the nineteenth century, many Native American Tribal Nations were forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands and relocated to what was then known as Indian Territory. The events surrounding these removals are among the most difficult chapters in American history. Yet they are also the beginning of an extraordinary story of resilience, adaptation, leadership, and cultural continuity that continues today.

Following federal removal policies during the nineteenth century, numerous Tribal Nations established new homes in Indian Territory. Over time, they built schools, churches, businesses, governments, and thriving communities. They preserved languages, ceremonies, and cultural traditions while adapting to new surroundings.

Today, Ottawa County is home to several federally recognized Tribal Nations with deep historical ties to the area, including the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma, Quapaw Nation, Wyandotte Nation, Seneca-Cayuga Nation, Shawnee Tribe, Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, and the Modoc Nation. Each nation has its own distinct history, culture, and traditions. While they share geography, they should never be viewed as a single story. Each continues to serve its citizens while contributing to the economic, cultural, and civic life of northeast Oklahoma.

More than a museum reopening, Decades of Dobson celebrates the stories, people, and community spirit that have shaped Ottawa County for generations.

There are moments when a community comes together to celebrate more than a building.

Yesterday was one of those moments.

On Saturday, April 11, friends, neighbors, museum supporters, local organizations, and visitors from across the region gathered for Decades of Dobson, a day-long celebration marking the reopening of the Dobson Museum & Home and honoring more than five decades of preserving Ottawa County history.

The event followed Thursday's ribbon-cutting ceremony, held exactly 54 years after the museum first opened its doors. Together, the two events marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of Ottawa County's most treasured cultural institutions.

Throughout the day, visitors explored the museum's newly renovated galleries, connected with fellow history enthusiasts, enjoyed food trucks, visited with partner organizations, and experienced firsthand the transformation of the Dobson Museum & Home.

How Big Are Barn Quilts?

Most barn quilts you’ll see along quilt trails range from 2' × 2' to 8' × 8'—single blocks designed to be viewed from the road. Large-scale installations are rare. One of the largest community barn quilts in the country—a 504-square-foot installation in Rowan County, North Carolina—was created by over 100 volunteers.

When you walk into the Dobson Museum, this is the first thing you see—and it stops people in their tracks.

A wall of color. Geometry. Story.

Our barn quilt—the largest in Ottawa County and, until recently, the largest in Oklahoma—is more than a display. It’s a piece of community, built panel by panel, story by story.

What Makes Barn Quilts So Special?

Barn quilts are a uniquely American folk art tradition—painted quilt blocks on wood, typically mounted on barns, homes, and rural buildings. They blend simple geometry (squares, triangles, stars), bold color and symmetry, and personal and cultural storytelling.

Over the past two decades, barn quilts have surged in popularity through quilt trails—mapped routes that attract travelers, photographers, and heritage tourists across the Midwest and South.

They sit at the intersection of art, history, and place—which is exactly why they resonate.

Who Makes Barn Quilts?

Traditionally, barn quilts are created by local artists and craftspeople, community groups and volunteers, quilt guilds and workshops, and individuals honoring family heritage or land.

That spirit of collaboration is exactly what defines ours.

As part of this project, area residents came together in workshops—painting individual panels that now form one cohesive piece. Each block reflects a different hand, a different story, a different connection to this region.

What Makes the Dobson Barn Quilt Unique?

Until recently, this barn quilt held the distinction of being the largest barn quilt in Oklahoma. It was created by more than 75 community members from Miami and across the region.

“It [The Miami Barn Quilt] brought the community together—one piece at a time. People met who had never met before. Some came from Owasso, Enid—really, all over Oklahoma—just to be part of it,” says Connie Benedict, project coordinator.

There are barn quilts—and then there’s this masterpiece with the hooks that truly matter to barn quilt enthusiasts such as:

Scale: One of the largest barn quilt installations in the region and the largest in Northeast Oklahoma
Community-built: Created through local workshops, not a single artist
Layered storytelling: Each block has its own origin and meaning
Full-scale Interior wall experience: Unlike roadside quilts, you can stand inches away and study every detail
Designed to be experienced both up close and across the room

And then there’s the design itself—florals, stars, traditional blocks, and modern interpretations, all working together.

Our Barn Quilt Story

This project was led by Connie Benedict of Miami, Oklahoma, beginning in 2017 and completed in 2018. Workshops were held at her studio, with materials prepared locally and panels painted by community members—friends, families, neighbors.

Originally unveiled by the Miami Regional Chamber of Commerce at Fall Fest , the quilt has now found its permanent home here at the Dobson Museum—where it belongs, as part of the story of this county.

The Dobson Museum & Home Reopens

After an extensive transformation, the Dobson Museum & Home is ready to welcome the community back—reimagined, revitalized, and more engaging than ever. The grand reopening marks not just a milestone for the museum, but a renewed commitment to preserving and sharing the stories that define Ottawa County.

This isn’t simply a reopening. It’s a return—with purpose. A founders vision reimagined.

Visitors will experience eight newly designed galleries, immersive exhibits, and thoughtfully curated artifacts that bring local history to life in ways that are both meaningful and memorable. Every detail has been designed to make the museum more accessible, more engaging, and more connected to the people it serves.

“This museum has always belonged to the community,” said Jordan Byrd, Museum Director, “This renovation allows us to honor that legacy while creating a space where stories can be experienced—not just displayed. We want every visitor to feel a sense of connection when they walk through these doors.”

That connection is deeply personal for many—including 94-year-old Nancy Gee, a beloved retired school teacher, former library board member, and member of the Friends of the Coleman Theatre Ballroom.

“I knew Nellie,” Gee reflected. “She believed in preserving history because she believed in people. Seeing this place brought back to life—full of energy and stories again—feels like something she would be very proud of.”

The reopening celebration invites guests of all ages to explore, discover, and reconnect. Families can enjoy interactive exhibits, engage with knowledgeable docents sharing stories throughout the galleries, and experience a museum designed to inspire and inform.

Spring Exhibit (April–June) The Origins of the Museum

The first exhibit of the year looks inward—exploring how the Ottawa County Historical Society was formed and how the museum itself came to be.

Featuring some of the earliest artifacts in the collection, this exhibit provides a rare glimpse into the foundation of the institution and the individuals who helped preserve local history for future generations.

Summer Exhibit (July–Sept) Celebrating America in Ottawa County: 250

In recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, this exhibit highlights how patriotism has been expressed locally over time.

Through archival materials and artifacts—including reflections on the 1976 Bicentennial—visitors will see how national milestones take on unique meaning at the community level. The exhibit also features panels from Moments That Made Us, connecting local stories to the broader American experience.

Fall Exhibit (October–December) Centennial on the Mother Road

Few routes carry the cultural weight of Route 66—and Ottawa County has long been part of that story.

This exhibit captures 50 locations along the “Mother Road,” presenting a compelling then-and-now perspective. Newly commissioned photography brings these sites to life, offering visitors a visual journey through a century of change.

A Season of Giving (November–January) The Giving Trees

Returning again this year, the Giving Trees initiative invites visitors to support worthy organizations across Ottawa County during the holiday season.

The Dobson Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and welcomes visitors to explore at their own pace—with knowledgeable staff and docents ready to share stories along the way.
